Daschstein Sudwand / Schladming

You can get to the Daschstein Sudwand from Obertraun by train to Schladming and then by bus to the cablecar station in about 2.5 hours.
In summer you can see the gletcher and get into the Ice Palace-the chamber cut in the ice - to get a feeling of the gletcher from inside. Dachstein Sud offers numerous hiking and climbing opportunities in summer.
In winter (as well as in summer) you can ski on the gletcher and do the Dachstein crossing which is called the Austria's National ski tour from Schladming to Obertrain over the gletchers. If you are based in Obertraun, you can come to Schladming to spend the night there and do the tour in the morning, or you can go to Schladming by car in the morning and cross the gletcher to return home.
Preservation of the glaciers is in the focus of attention of scientists and research is ongoing in this area. A lot of emphasis was given to the ecological aspects during the modernisation of the cable car system of the Dachstein Bahn and connection of all the facilities to the public electrical networks which allowed to eliminate the diesel generators. Careful dealing with nature in the thoughts and actions is a prerequisite for the employees.  Awareness of the Dachstein guests is facilitated by the efforts of the staff  to make them aware of  environmentally friendly actions like observing and enjoying nature, leaving no trace behind and keeping trash in the high-alpine region to a minimum.
